Day 7 – Washington Predictions
Vekic d. Kuznetsova in three sets – I haven’t watched any of their matches this week but they seemed to have been impressive, especially Kuznetsova’s scorelines so far. However Vekic will be the first top 50 player’s the Russian’s playing this week and I wonder if she can handle the firepower of the Croatian.
Day 5 – Washington Predictions
Petkovic d. Bencic in three sets – Bencic leads the head to head 2-0, with their last meeting in 2016 – since then so much have changed for them! Instinct is Petkovic gets this as she has been winning matches of late.
Kuznetsova d. Putintseva in three sets – Kuznetsova has only dropped six games in two matches but if she gets embroiled into long rallies with Putintseva this could be a really messy and long encounter. I think Kuznetsova will still come through though…
Vekic d. Linette in two sets – Very impressed with Vekic of late. She’s the more dynamic and powerful player of the two.
Zheng d. Kiick in three sets – Don’t know much about Kiick? I think this could go three though.
Day 4 – Washington Predictions
Bencic d. Hibino in two sets – I think we’ll see a lot of long rallies in this one, with Bencic edging most of them with her bigger firepower and experience.
Vekic d. Stollar in three sets – Stollar has been stealthily making her rise up her rankings, and does seem to play better tennis against a higher ranked player. She can definitely match Vekic power for power so this could be a fascinating watch. Vekic though has been pretty consistent of late and has been getting the wins she is expected to get against lower-ranked opponents.
Bonaventure d. Zheng in three sets – Really surprised to see Zheng winning here after a really sad retirement to Wang in the Nanchang final. I think Bonaventure is a powerful player and should be able to hit through Zheng if the latter’s facing fatigue.
Osaka d. Linette in two sets – Don’t see Linette causing too many problems, unless she can get her counter-punching abilities to frustrate Osaka.
Kuznetsova d. Bogdan in three sets – My match of the day in Washington. If you don’t know much about Bogdan just yet, she’s a fiery competitor and her groundstrokes are pretty powerful on her day. I think this will be a very close match but experience will prevail on the day.
Putintseva d. Brady in three sets – I think Putintseva will drive Brady crazy with her relentless defense and moonballs in the end.
Day 1 – Washington Selected Predictions
Petkovic d. Loeb in two sets – An important tournament for Petkovic to not slip down the rankings too much having reached the semifinals here last year. Haven’t watched Loeb before; Petkovic should win this unless she makes things difficult for herself.
Kuznetsova d. Ahn in three sets – Kuznetsova hasn’t been able to win back-to-back matches since Istanbul and has been struggling a lot on the tour. Ahn is a decent player and could cause troubles for Kuznetsova but I’ll expect the veteran to come through.
Makarova d. Bogdan in three sets – Makarova revived her fortunes in singles in Wimbledon, but with her character and game I expect her to face some inconsistencies throughout the whole year. I really like Bogdan’s game and fighting spirit and I think this could be a very fiesty encounter. Going for the defending champion to come through in the end though.
Vekic d. Dolehide in three sets – Could be a very fun match-up as both players have similar gamestyles. Vekic in 3.
Krunic d. Boulter in two sets – Krunic can make life difficult for herself at times but picking her to come through in two tight sets.
