Libema Open, ‘s-Hertogenbosch Predictions
Huge apologies for no predictions for the rest of the week! I was on vacation and the internet connection overseas wasn’t working.
Day 4 – ‘s-Hertogenbosch Predictions
Mertens d. Lottner in two sets – Lottner’s hard-hitting will probably cause some problems in the beginning but I doubt she’ll have the nerve or consistency to rally from the baseline consistently with Mertens.
Flipkens d. Bertens in three sets – I watched Bertens’ first round win against Vikhlyantseva and I can see why she really struggles on grass. Unlike on the slower clay, Bertens does not have time to move around to hit the big forehand, and the first serve is her only weapon on this surface. Unlike Bertens, Flipkens’ all around game and lethal backhand slice is a great match for the green stuff. Flipkens also leads the head to head 3-1, and has won their past three meetings.
Riske d. Stollar in three sets – Dangerous match-up for Riske as Stollar is a hard-hitting player that can blow any opponent off court, but Riske’s experience and more solid play in the important moments should come through.
Tomljanovic d. Sabalenka in three sets – Sabalenka does not seem very comfortable playing on the grass and she was pretty fortunate to get past the first round after a huge choke from Vondrousova. Tomljanovic has all the weapons to excel on this surface and she can definitely compete with Sabalenka’s huge power.
Day 3 – ‘s-Hertogenbosch Predictions
Krunic d. Schoofs in two sets
Vandeweghe d. Rus in two sets – I think Vandeweghe should be stronger in all departments so with no mental lapses, she should win this one comfortably.
Bencic d. Kudermetova in three sets – I watched both players’ round one and both were very impressive, especially Kudermetova who upset defending champ Kontaveit. I’m not sure whether Kudermetova will be able to back up the win as Bencic is a more solid player and will bring more balls back then Kontaveit did.
Van Uytvanck d. Kuzmova in three sets – Both players’ games are really suited to the grass but I’m backing the more experienced Van Uytvanck to do more damage with her kick serve and forehand.
Day 2 – ‘s-Hertogenbosch Predictions
Vikhlyantseva d. Bertens in three sets – Preview
Mertens d. Hercog in two sets – Not expecting too much from Hercog, who is definitely more of a clay courter. Mertens’ favourite surface is actually grass too.
Kontaveit d. Kudermetova in three sets – I watched a little of Kudermetova in Stuttgart and she has a huge-hitting game, but can be prone to inconsistency as well. Kontaveit is a superb player on grass and I think she’ll win this one, but might face some stiff opposition from Kudermetova at times.
Flipkens d. Kalinskaya in two sets – Kalinskaya is another inconsistent power player and should be more lethal on grass, but Flipkens’ variety and experience should bring her through this one. Flipkens’ favourite surface is grass and she reached the semifinals of Wimbledon back in 2013.
Krunic d. Grammatikopoulou in two sets
Bencic d. Martincova in three sets – Bencic has been struggling with injuries of late and just came back to the tour in the French Open. Martincova should stand a chance in this one, but inexperience may be the key factor – she’s 3-6 against top 70 players lifetime.
Riske d. Maria in three sets – Preview
Kuzmova d. Melnikova in two sets – Both have really similar games, but Kuzmova is a tad more solid. I watched a bit of Melnikova in Strasbourg and she really has difficulty with the serve, and is obviously less experienced in WTA events.
Zhang d. Stollar in three sets – Not an easy opener for Zhang at all… I think she’ll barely come out unscathed with Stollar failing during the important moments.
Blinkova d. Lottner in three sets – Battle of the hard-hitting qualifiers. Expecting a huge mess…
Tomljanovic d. Kr.Pliskova in two sets
Day 1 – ‘s-Hertogenbosch Predictions
Van Uytvanck d. Hogenkamp in three sets – I watched Hogenkamp’s match against Sharapova and I was quite impressed with her defense and variety. However I don’t think she’ll be able to do too much of that on grass, especially against a harder hitter like Van Uytvanck. Van Uytvanck leads the head to head 2-0, and her favourite surface is the grass.
Vandeweghe d. Sasnovich in three sets – Preview
Witthoeft d. Schoofs in two sets
Rus d. Alexandrova in three sets – Alexandrova leads the head to head 3-0, but all of their meetings came on clay a few years back. Alexandrova doesn’t have too much experience on the grass and Rus should use the home support to good effect.
