Kr.Pliskova d. Barthel in three – Barthel has had a stunning week in Prague but the home crowd will certainly be cheering on Kristyna and I think she’ll collect her second WTA title of her career.
Strycova d. Barthel in two – Qualifier Barthel has been so good this week, not sure whether going for Strycova to beat her in straights is a wise decision! However Strycova has been brilliant this week too and I think she’ll progress.
Kr.Pliskova d. Ostapenko in three – Kristyna is now the only Czech left in the draw and she’ll have more added pressure. Ostapenko is playing the match just hours later after a three set victory over Konjuh, and might not have too much left in the tank.
Barthel d. Giorgi in three – Barthel was so impressive in the live stream I watched yesterday of her against Dodin, she hit 14 aces with the loss of just four games! Giorgi has been brilliant this week too but I don’t think she can stop the German from progressing.
Strycova d. Siniakova in three – Strycova has been pretty smooth-sailing this week, while Siniakova has been far from that, being pushed to three sets in both matches. Although Siniakova has beaten Strycova before in Prague, the latter will be fresh for this match and should win it.
Kr.Pliskova d. Haddad Maia in three – Once again Stosur made a flop out of herself and fell to Haddad Maia in the previous round. I think Kristyna can take advantage of the opening and proceed to the semifinals. Still you can’t take anything from Haddad Maia and I think she’ll be able to take a set.
Ostapenko d. Konjuh in three – On the fence with everything today! Between the two teenagers, Ostapenko seems slightly better on clay.
Round 2 (4/7)
Giorgi d. Wang in three – It will obviously depend on Giorgi’s form for this match. Probably Giorgi will just scrap through this.
Barthel d. Dodin in three – Interesting match. Barthel had a fantastic win over Zhang Shuai, and I think her confidence is building up and will win this match.
Strycova d. Hradecka in two – Strycova leads the HTH among the Czechs and should win this,
Siniakova d. Vikhlyantseva in three – Was tempted to go for Vikhlyantseva after an emphatic 6-1 6-1 thumping of Golubic, but decided to go for my original finalist prediction of Siniakova. If the heavy Vikhlyantseva groundstrokes keep going into the court, I think she could take the upset.
Safarova d. Kr.Pliskova in two – Safarova is much more comfortable with clay and should take this over fellow Czech Kristyna Pliskova.
Stosur d. Haddad Maia in two – Haddad Maia has garnered some nice wins on the WTA this year, but Stosur should win this.
Vondrousova d. Konjuh in three – Konjuh snapped a four match losing streak after a straightforward win over Jana Cepelova. However, sticking with Vondrousova with a crowd for her.
Wozniacki d. Ostapenko in three – Ostapenko leads the head-to-head, 2-0 and won recently in Charleston. Ostapenko had a solid first round win over Tsurenko whie Wozniacki won her first match on red clay since 2015 against Doi. A difficult test for the Dane but I guess she’ll scrap through…
Round 1 (9/16)
Ka.Pliskova d. Giorgi in two – Giorgi is a tough first rounder but not convinced by either on clay so going for the more solid Pliskova.
Sakkari d. Wang in three – Wang just won a WTA 125K title in Zhengzhou but not sure about her with clay.
Beck d. Dodin in three – The more solid and consistent Beck should take this over Dodin who prefers much faster hard courts.
Zhang d. Barthel in three – Sensing an upset but will stick with Zhang. Clay’s not Zhang’s surface and Barthel will certainly use that to good effect.
Goerges d. Strycova in three – Strycova’s less reliable on clay but so is Goerges. Have a slight hunch for Goerges though the head to head is tied at four wins apiece.
Hradecka d. Linette in two – Linette has been struggling so Hradecka, who has already played three matches, should take this.
Vikhlyantseva d. Golubic in three – Vikhlyantseva’s run to the semifinals in St.Petersburg was impressive. I think she could overpower Golubic.
Siniakova d. Kovinic in two – Kovinic has a horrendous 2-10 record in 2017. Siniakova’s much more reliable.
Safarova d. Kucova in two – Safarova maybe poised for another great run in Prague?
Jankovic d. Kr.Pliskova in three – Very interesting first rounder. Not convinced with Kristyna’s movement on clay but even more not convinced with Jankovic’s level. However I’ll give Jankovic the benefit of the doubt to proceed to the next round.
McHale d. Haddad Maia in two – McHale should win.
Stosur d. Rodina in two – Never know when Stosur’s playing well and when she isn’t but she should progress against Rodina.
Konjuh d. Cepelova in two – Cepelova just went out in the semifinals of Istanbul but a solid Konjuh display will see her go through.
Vondrousova d. Witthoeft in two – Guessing Vondrousova’s massive win total will increase again this week?
Ostapenko d. Tsurenko in three – Undecided on this one. Actually went for Tsurenko earlier on but an aggressive Ostapenko would see her win in straight sets. But on clay, things will probably be different.
Wozniacki d. Doi in two – Wozniacki for the win.
