Mallorca Open Predictions
Day 7 – Mallorca Predictions
Bencic d. Kenin in two sets – Both scored wins against higher ranked players – Kenin beat the Mallorca GOAT Sevastova, while Bencic outhit and out-punched Kerber in three sets. Bencic’s game is really suited to grass and in my opinion, does everything a little better than Kenin. Kenin’s a great competitor but don’t see her being able to hit through Bencic here.
Day 6 – Mallorca Predictions
Sevastova d. Kenin in three sets – Sevastova continues to play her best tennis at Mallorca and she’s the type of player that always seems to do well at her favourite events. Kenin will really need to be much more consistent than in the previous round to hit through Sevastova’s variety and defence. While Kenin may cause some troubles, ultimately Sevastova should be able to make it into her fourth straight Mallorca final.
Kerber d. Bencic in two sets – Kerber is definitely rounding into form at the right time right before her Wimbledon title defence. She served well and played consistently against Garcia and will have to adopt a similar gameplan against Bencic. Bencic played her best match of the week against Anisimova but Kerber is a totally different opponent and she’ll have to try to take control of the rallies as much as possible. Kerber though is playing great and a similar kind of performance from the previous two rounds will see her into her first final in Mallorca.
Day 5 – Mallorca Predictions
Mertens d. Kenin in three sets – Both players cruised through their first two rounds in straights. Both have very similar games but Mertens is more comfortable at the net while Kenin is more of a scrapper and fighter. Should be a very close match between two food competitors. Edging towards Mertens’ preference to grass on this one though.
Bencic d. Anisimova in three sets – Anisimova was super impressive against Cornet but Bencic is a much tougher prospect in terms of the latter’s good court sense and quick speed around the court. Bencic hasn’t played her best tennis this week but feel that she should be starting to settle on the grass and play some good ball soon.
Sevastova d. Y.Wang in two sets – There’s two tournaments you know Sevastova will always play good tennis at – that’s the US Open and Mallorca tournament! She’s 10-2 at Mallorca and has made the finals here the last two times she played this event. Sevastova should be too smart and solid for Wang in this one. (edit: Sevastova also reached the finals here in 2017, so she should be at 15 wins in Mallorca, apologies!)
Kerber d. Garcia in two sets – Kerber played arguably her best match of the year against Sharapova and is looking very good on the grass at the moment. Garcia is a similar type of player and while she is on a seven-match winning streak, her two wins in Mallorca have not come easy. So long Kerber continues her motivated ways from the Sharapova match, she should counter-punch her way to victory comfortably.
Day 4 – Mallorca Predictions
Bencic d. Rogers in two sets – Bencic leads the head to head 2-1, but they haven’t met since 2014. Bencic the clear favourite but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Rogers put some pressure on Bencic with her big and bold game. Ultimately Bencic should come up tops with her confidence and more consistent game though.
Anisimova d. Cornet in three sets – Both players aren’t the best on grass courts but Anisimova has way less experience on it with her win over Martincova in the previous round her first main draw win and match on grass. Very surprised to see Cornet beating Sorribes Tormo 0 & 1 as she’s been lacking confidence and power in her strokes of late. Feel that Anisimova will thrive on grass in the future, but she’ll need time to adjust so this should be a nervy and scrappy battle. Still have to head with Anisimova’s recent form in this one.
Kerber d. Sharapova in three sets – Match of the day as they’ll be meeting for the ninth time in their careers having split their previous eight meetings. For her first match in five months, it was a very impressive display from Sharapova who fought off the power of Kuzmova in the first round and won all the big points. Kerber was less convincing against Bonaventure but a win is a win. Their meeting at last year’s Australian Open was straightforward for Kerber but her form has dipped so kind of expecting a competitive yet messy match. It’ll likely be on Sharapova’s racket as she’ll be dictating most of the rallies and the match result will depend on whether she can get the ball into court more often than not. As she’s lacking match practice, she could really struggle if Kerber gets into brick wall mode and keeps getting balls back into court. Kerber just…
Garcia d. Riske in two sets – Garcia was on the ropes against Azarenka but found her range in the end to capitalise on an Azarenka choke. Doubt she will experience too many problems against a home player.
Day 2 – Mallorca Centre Court Predictions
Sevastova d. Lepchenko in three sets – Sevastova leads the head to head 2-1, with both of her victories coming in three sets. Sevastova doesn’t really deal well with hard-hitting lefties because the Ad side wide serve usually goes into her backhand which is the weaker wing. Sevastova always plays her best tennis in Mallorca though so she should come through this one unscathed eventually.
Azarenka d. Garcia in three sets – Garcia leads the head to head 2-0 but instinct is Azarenka comes through this one after Garcia had a tough and testing week in Nottingham. Vika is playing her first match on grass though so unsure about her level coming into this one.
Kuzmova d. Sharapova in three sets – Sharapova’s first match since St.Petersburg after having to deal with her recurring shoulder injury. Kuzmova’s a very dangerous player and Sharapova will definitely be rusty with her movement and groundstrokes, especially on the grass where she has not performed well in recent years. If on fire, Kuzmova can easily dictate play and move Sharapova around. Feels like this match is more on Kuzmova’s racket and it could go either way.
Kerber d. Bonaventure in two sets – Both are lefties but don’t see Bonaventure causing too many issues for Kerber. A possible Kerber – Sharapova R2 match…
Day 1 – Mallorca Selected Predictions
Tomljanovic d. Puig in two sets – Watched Tomljanovic’s match against Tatjana Maria in Nottingham where she was troubled by Maria’s spins and speeds and the vicious slices. Puig’s a completely different player with her power and inconsistency though. First match of the year for Puig on grass so she will need to make adjustments. Tomljanovic should come through this one unscathed.
Bencic d. Peterson in two sets – Have never seen Bencic on grass too much before but she has a very healthy win-loss record of 32-16 on the lawns. Meanwhile Peterson is 7-4 on it and hasn’t played too many main draw matches on the grass. Peterson’s had a medicore year trying to back up her successes from 2018 so Bencic’s game and confidence at the moment should shine through.
Mertens d. Petkovic in two sets – Mertens was completely blown away by Alexandrova in her first round match from ‘s-Hertogenbosch, but Petkovic is a completely different player because the German rather lacks the weapons to overpower her opponents. Mertens lists grass as her favourite surface and this should be a good match-up for her to see what she can do on it.
Flipkens d. Kenin in three sets – Kenin reached the semifinals of Mallorca last year as a qualifier but Flipkens is much more experienced on this surface and with the slice and good net tactics, her game’s completely fit for the grass. This will be Kenin’s first match of the year on grass and not sure whether it suits her game. Nonetheless, she’s a fighter and eve if she’s not playing her best she should still cause problems for Flipkens. Still, Flipkens for the win.
