Mind blown at this match-up… only Stuttgart will be able to produce first rounders this to be honest. The World No.10, Petra Kvitova will face the World No.12, Angelique Kerber in the first round of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. I was pretty motivated to get a full preview out of this and so, here’s my attempt at trying to predict the result. Read on… 😉
Stuttgart Round One
Petra Kvitova (No.9) vs Angelique Kerber (No.12)
One day after reading the news that Kvitova-Kerber was a round 1 match-up, I’m still completely overwhelmed 😂😂😂. This is kinda hilarious too because Germany and Czech Republic are battling it out for a spot in the Fed Cup final, and Kvitova-Kerber is going to be the third rubber there! So they’ll be playing each other twice in like, three days? 😂
Anyway, back to the match. As mentioned in my tournament preview, Kvitova has a complicated relationship with the clay. She’s won the Premier Mandatory tournament in Madrid twice (though it must be mentioned that the conditions there are pretty quick) but she has only made it to the Roland Garros quarterfinals once in her career. Her hard-hitting game definitely isn’t suited for this surface, but the quick indoor conditions in Stuttgart will definitely help her out. Kvitova already has had a match in the Porsche Tennis Arena as she dismantled Julia Goerges 6-3, 6-1 in Fed Cup action.
Since the Australia swing where Kerber excelled (Hopman Cup & Sydney titles, Australian Open semifinals), Kerber has endured a bit of a lull. Judging by her results it’s not exactly fair to say that considering she had made the quarterfinals in all of her tournaments this year, but her losses of late have been rather concerning. Kerber suffered demolition losses to Elina Svitolina (3-6 3-6), Daria Kasatkina (0-6, 2-6) and Sloane Stephens (1-6, 2-6) in her last three events. Clay has always been Kerber’s weakest surface, though she has had success in Stuttgart before, winning back-to-back titles in 2015 & 2016.
Head to head: These two players last met in 2016 where they played one of the best matches of the year in Wuhan. Kvitova won that one, 6-7(10) 7-5 6-4 in a high quality battle of hard-hitting and finesse. The overall series is tied at 5-5, with Kerber leading the head to head on clay 2-1. The pair have met on the Stuttgart clay before in 2016, which Kerber won.
Thoughts: This was just one of many many matches which I took ages decide the winner in my draw! I’m slightly more inclined to pick Petra with her recent form, but Angie always has done well on home soil. The conditions seem to suit Petra to a tee though. I’m 51-49 in favour of Kvitty but I’m just hoping for a greattt match!
Final Prediction: Petra Kvitova d. Angelique Kerber in three sets
