2018 Australian Open Round 4 Preview: Elina Svitolina vs Denise Allertova

The bottom half of the Australian Open women’s draw may not have as much intrigue as the top half, but we still have a couple of interesting fourth round matches in this half that the blog will be previewing. Read on for a preview for Elina Svitolina vs Denise Allertova. Other previews will come soon…

Australian Open Fourth Round

[4] Elina Svitolina (No.4) vs Denise Allertova (No.130)

Elina Svitolina has disclosed that she has been struggling with injury issues before the Aussie Open but it seems like it had little effect on her performances in 2018. Svitolina is currently on an eight-match winning streak, which consists of a 10th WTA title in Brisbane and three wins in Melbourne Park already. It has not been a cakewalk draw for the Ukranian as she went through a tough two setter against qualifier Jorovic and struggled against Katerina Siniakova in bruising heat conditions. Her latest performance was a more impressive one, hitting 11 winners to the same number of errors in a 6-2 6-2 demolition of fellow countrywoman Marta Kostyuk. Equally impressive is the number of first serves Svitolina landed in, averaging at 71% in the match.

Denise Allertova is also on a winning streak, now at win number six after being able to qualify for the main draw in Melbourne and managing to win three main draw matches to reach her first second week appearance in a Slam. Having not won a WTA level match since September in Tashkent and having not beaten a top 100 player since July, the Czech player has beaten three top 100 players in succession in Pauline Parmentier, Zhang Shuai and Magda Linette.

Stats: Svitolina is 11-2 in 2017~2018 against players outside the top 100. Losses: i. Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Camila Giorgi.

Allertova is 3-2 against top 10 players. Wins: d. Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep, Carla Suarez Navarro.

Thoughts: Allertova has a huge game and as mentioned above in the stat she can step her level up against top 10 counterpunchers having beaten Halep and Kerber before. However, I believe the heat and the experience of Svitolina will be too much of her as Svitolina’s defense will eventually put her in too many difficult situations.

Prediction: Elina Svitolina d. Denise Allertova in two sets
