Yesterday was finals day at the two tournaments in Bucharest and Gstaad, won by Irina-Camelia Begu and Kiki Bertens respectively.
Kiki Bertens is the 2017 Gstaad champion! Fighting against the odds, she battled past Anett Kontaveit in three sets in the Swiss alps. The first set was mainly decided by Kontaveit’s unforced errors – she wasn’t at her best and wasn’t hitting with much depth and pace, which allowed Bertens to dictate play. Whenever Kontaveit tried to play offense, she missed – but that changed in the second set with Bertens making much more errors. The Estonian also played smartly, hitting a couple of drop shots that Bertens’ didn’t anticipate at all. Bertens was understandably fatigued too, having played doubles as well. Into a third set and at 1-1, Kontaveit made a stream of unforced errors and eventually lost the last five games of the match. Bertens was even crying on a changeover, which made the result even stranger! But still, congrats to the Dutchwoman who claimed the second title for the year in Gstaad.
Check out this piece by WTA Insider where Bertens’ talked about her goals for this year, being back in the Top 30, and more.
ICYMI: Bertens also claimed the doubles title with Johanna Larsson!
Not one, but two. Irina-Camelia Begu sweeped Bucharest too by winning the singles and doubles title, the latter with fellow Romanian Raluca Olaru.
The singles victory over Julia Goerges was not without controversy though. During the one hour and forty minute contest, the crowd were cheering on Goerges’ errors and silent when the German made a winner, which made Goerges say this during the prize ceremony:
There were also a couple of ITF events over the week. Zhang Shuai claimed the 100K Astana championship without losing a set, while Bernarda Pera claimed the biggest title in her career over top seed Kristyna Pliskova at the 80K Olomouc event.
Next week there will be two WTA tournaments – one in Bastad and the other in Nanchang. I will be blogging everyday for the Bastad tournament with predictions, roundups and more! The tournament preview will also be linked below hereonce I am done with it.
Lastly, two people tied the knot a few days ago – Aga Radwanska and Andrea Hlavackova. Wishing them a happy marriage!
