Fed Cup World Group I Semifinal Previews: USA-Czech Republic, Belarus-Switzerland

It’s Fed Cup semifinals from 22-23 April! Four countries will be bidding to secure their place in the final as USA takes on Czech Republic and surprise semifinalist Belarus faces off against Switzerland.

United States of America vs Czech Republic

Country: Florida, USA

Surface: Outdoor green clay

A highly pumped team USA will bid to make it into their first Fed Cup final in seven years. To do that, they’ll have to face defending champions Czech Republic. It seems like a difficult prospect at first, but the Czech team is highly weakened after Karolina Pliskova and Barbora Strycova decided to skip the Fed Cup to participate in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. The USA team is really smart to pick green clay as the surface, the Czech players all struggle on clay plus the Americans are all used to play on the surface. All points to a USA victory.

Match predictions (unless substitutions are made, the matches should follow this way):

Coco Vandeweghe d. Kristyna Pliskova in two – Pliskova doesn’t like clay and her movement will be exploited on the surface. Vandeweghe to take it comfortably.

Katerina Siniakova d. Lauren Davis in three – Could see it going either way.

Vandeweghe d. Siniakova in three – Feeling confident about Vandeweghe and Florida lol. Siniakova could pick on the Vandweghe weaknesses but I still have slight confidence in choosing the American.

Davis d. Kr.Pliskova in two – Even though it’s the faster green clay, clay and Kristyna don’t suit each other well!

USA d. Czech Republic 3-1

Belarus vs Switzerland

Country: Minsk, Belarus

Surface: Indoor hard courts

With Victoria Azarenka sitting out of the Fed Cup, Belarus’ highest player is No.108 Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Facing an experienced team in the form of Timea Bacsinszky, Martina Hingis and more, it seems like an impossible hill for the Belarus team to climb. But they did it against Netherlands in the quarters, can they do it once again with the crowd support?

Match predictions (unless substitutions are made, the matches should follow this way):

Golubic d. Sasnovich in three – Rematch alert! They’re facing each other in Switzerland this week- where Golubic has the support, then they’ll meet again where Sasnovich has the home ground advantage. Tomorrow’s match should be a good gauge on where this match will go.

Bacsinszky d. Sabalenka in two Sabalenka hasn’t played since March where she made an ITF final. Bacsinszky for the win.

Bacsinszky d. Sasnovich in two – I’m having faith with Bacinszky on heading into the clay season.

Switzerland d. Belarus 3-0
