Double Dashas, Kasatkina and Gavrilova, face each other in the third round of the Volvo Car Open.
Daria Kasatkina (No.42) vs Daria Gavrilova (No.40)
Overview: My favourite match of Day 4 of Charleston is definitely Daria vs Daria! The younger Dasha, Kasatkina, has been enduring a tough start to 2017 but her fortunes has seemed to be reversed on clay. Starting with a thumping of Danka Kovinic in straights, she appeared on course for another straight sets win over Monica Puig. but it didn’t happen! Kasatkina just managed to eek out a victory over Puig, 6-0 6-7(3) 6-2. All of her three encounters against Puig has now gone to three sets.
Gavrilova has also been struggling since the Australian Open but has seemed to settle well with the green clay of Charleston. Gavrilova was down 1-3 in her opening encounter against Alison Riske, but stormed back to win in straight sets with the loss of just one game since then. Gavrilova finished the match with 29 winners to 15 unforced errors.
Head to head: They’ve only met once – at the 2015 US Open where Kasatkina defeated Gavrilova in a tight three set tussle!
Thoughts: This could be a fantastic rivalry in the years to come! Both have loads of variety and play with a counter-punching style so this should be interesting. Obviously they’re friends off the court, so want to watch this match ahhhh. I’ll give the edge to Kasatkina here, she’s a better clay courter than the Australian but it could go both ways!
Prediction: Kasatkina d. Gavrilova in three sets
