Doubles partners Timea Babos and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova face off for a semifinal spot in the Abierto GNP Seguros in Monterrey.
(5) Timea Babos (No.30) vs (2) Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (No.16)
Overview: Timea Babos and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova have already won a doubles title together, in Sydney, but this time they will be facing each other instead. Pavlyuchenkova has already made three quarterfinals throughout the season so far, in Sydney, Australian Open, and Indian Wells. She came into Monterrey off a disappointing loss to then ranked No.158 Bethanie Mattek-Sands, but has done well this week to stay in a tournament she had much success in. After a comfortable opening round win against Tatjana Maria, she struggled in her second match against qualifier Kristie Ahn but managed to eek out a straight set win, 7-6(5) 6-4.
Even though she has a losing record of 6-7 in the season, Timea Babos has already captured a title, in hometown Hungary where she beat Lucie Safarova for the title. Before that, she was on a five-match losing streak. Babos has cruised in Monterrey though, losing only nine games in her first two rounds against Lesley Kerkhove and Naomi Broady.
Head to head: They’ve never met before!
Thoughts: In 2017 Babos has never beaten a Top 45 player yet! It will be a huge test against Pavlyuchenkova who is already in her fourth quarterfinal of the year. I am picking Pavs here, the Russian has been so good in Monterrey every year that it’s difficult not to pick her! She can be erraric though but Babos can be the same as well. A three set tussle is to be expected.
Prediction: Pavlyuchenkova to defeat Babos in three
