The hottest two players will meet in the Miami Open semifinals for the second time in the year. Who will make it to their third final of 2017?
(12) Caroline Wozniacki (No.14) vs (2) Karolina Pliskova
Caroline Wozniacki has won a total of 22 matches this year, while Karolina Pliskova has a 23-3 win-loss record. Plus with their different styles, it provides a high-quality match-up. Wozniacki, the counterpuncher, has been excellent in 2017, making finals in Doha, Dubai and a quarterfinal in Indian Wells. Wozniacki has largely breezed through her matches in Miami, demolishing her first two opponents, Varvara Lepchenko and Sorana Cirstea in straight sets, before a retirement by Garbiñe Muguruza sent her into the quarterfinals. There she had a much tougher test against Lucie Safarova but still got it done in straights, 6-4 6-3.
Two of Pliskova’s only three losses came in Dubai and Indian Wells, where she was beaten by in-form players Kristina Mladenovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova respectively. The other loss came in the Australian Open, where she was beaten by Mirjana Lucic-Baroni disappointingly in three tough sets. She got her revenge in Miami though, blowing past Lucic-Baroni in the quarterfinals. Pliskova has steamrolled in Miami without losing a set, with convincing wins over Madison Brengle, Yulia Putintseva and Barbora Strycova.
Head to head: Wozniacki leads the HTH 3-1, but their previous match in the final of the Qatar Open obviously went to Pliskova. All encounters had happened on hard courts.
Thoughts: It’s almost impossible to guess who will go through into their third final of the year – they’re both coming into the match with extreme form. With their contrasting match, it’s going to be a fun encounter. I have no idea who to give the edge to – I’ll just pick Pliskova since she has a higher ranking. Who’ve you got for this match?
Prediction: Pliskova to beat Wozniacki in three
