Simona Halep and Johanna Konta will face each other for just the second time when they collide at the Miami Open quarterfinals today.
(3) Simona Halep (No.5) vs (10) Johanna Konta (No.11)
Overview: Simona Halep is having her best run of the season so far. Prior to Miami, Halep had not won back-to-back matches in 2017. Halep seems to be free for injuries for the first time in 2017 and the Romanian seems to be getting back her form. The No.3 seed started the week with a three set win over Naomi Osaka before easing past Anett Kontaveit in straights. In the fourth round, Halep bounced back froma set and a break down and saved match point to defeat Samantha Stosur 4-6 7-5 6-2.
Johanna Konta is another in-form player, posing a 16-3 win-loss record for the year. She started off the year with a semifinal appearance in Shenzhen, a title at Sydney, and made the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, losing to Serena Williams. Her level dipped a little at Indian Wells and Miami, but she has still managed to reach the quarterfinals here without losing a set so far. Konta survived her opening round opponent, Aliaksandra Sasnovich in three sets, got past Pauline Parmentier and Lara Arruabarrena in tight straight set wins to set up a blockbuster quarter-final encounter with Halep.
Head to head: Konta won the only previous match between the pair, a 6-3 3-6 7-5 win in Wuhan back in 2015.
Thoughts: Halep is playing her best tennis ever in 2017, but I’m going with Konta. The Britain’s not quite at the level she was in January, but she is the one coming into the match with much more confidence. Furthermore, this is Halep’s highest ranked opponent of 2017 and this is her first quarterfinal of the year. For all this reasons, I’m giving the edge to Konta.
Prediction: Konta to beat Halep in two
