Peng Shuai and Samantha Stosur meet for the eight time in their careers. Stosur has won 6 of the 7 encounters, while Peng won the most recent one.
Peng Shuai (No.43) vs (14) Samantha Stosur (No.19)
Overview: Peng Shuai has been excellent in both singles and doubles. In doubles, she won the title in Shenzhen and made the finals in the Australian Open and Dubai. In her singles endeavours, Peng reached the final in Taiwan but fell to Svitolina there. In last week’s Indian Wells, she reached the fourth round after coming out of qualifying but fell to Venus Williams there. Peng has been even more dominant in Miami, not dropping a set in her first two matches.
Samantha Stosur’s ranking of 19 doesn’t show her bad form she is in right now. Majority of her ranking points came from semifinal appearances in Madrid and Roland Garros last year, and she has went 5-7 in 2017 so far. She made a horrible start to the year, failing to win a single match in Australia. Stosur then was more promising in the next two tournaments, making quarterfinals in Taiwan and Doha, but has only won one match since that.
Head to head: This is the pair’s eighth encounter. Stosur had won all of their matches until 2017 where Peng won their recent match in Taiwan.
Thoughts: Even though Stosur dominates the match-up, I am going with the Chinese player for this one. Peng is in great form while Stosur is the exact opposite. The Australian has generally done well in Miami, so I may give her a set but Peng should do enough to make the fourth round here.
Prediction: Peng to beat Stosur in three
