Miami Open 2017 WTA Round 1 Preview: Eugenie Bouchard vs Ashleigh Barty

Two players on the opposite ends of their careers, Eugenie Bouchard and Ashleigh Barty will face off for a spot in the second round of the Miami Open.

Eugenie Bouchard (No.56) vs (WC) Ashleigh Barty (No.91)

Eugenie Bouchard’s confidence seemed to be back in Australia, reaching the semifinals in Sydney and a third round appearance at Melbourne Park. However, since then she has lost her next two matches in disappoint fashion, to Alja Tomljanovic in Acapulco (Tomljanovic was playing in her first tournament since 2015!) and to Annika Beck in Indian Wells. The match against Beck was of reaching distance for Bouchard, but she just made too many unforced errors at the wrong times. The Canadian will need to become more consistent if she wants to return to great heights again.

Ashleigh Barty is on fire. The former cricket player started the year at 271, and is already at a carrier high ranking of No.91. Barty started the year in Brisbane with a wildcard, and then pushed World No.1 Angelique Kerber to three sets in the second round. She then lost in qualifying in Hobart but rebounded wth a third round appearance in the Australian Open. Barty then won the Kuala Lumpur double, winning titles both in singles and doubles in the tournament. She hasn’t played since then, but she certainly stands a chance in this match.

Head to head: It’s their first meeting.

Thoughts: A hard-hitting Bouchard can certainly beat Barty, but an inconsistent Bouchard won’t. and there’s a higher chance that the latter will appear in the match today. Barty has been playing really solid and Bouchard’s passing shots will have to be on point if she wants to get pass the net-prone Australian.

Prediction: Barty to beat Bouchard in three
