Two former Top 10 players will battle it out on the court to end their losing streaks as former World No.5 Sara Errani and former World No.7 Belinda Bencic face off in the first round of the Miami Open.
Sara Errani (No.102) vs Belinda Bencic (No.135)
Overview: Sara Errani and Belinda Bencic have been plagued by injuries which resulted in their poor ranking, both outside of the Top 100. Since Charleston last year, Errani has lost twenty matches while only winning seven of them. She was defending winner’s points from Dubai last year but had to withdraw due to injury, thus the Italian’s ranking has plummeted to a low of 102. Hopefully Errani can rediscover her form that brought her to the Top 5 in rankings. Bencic is in horrific form too, having lost nine of her previous 29 matches, and since 2016 the Swiss had retired from six tournaments, showing how prone she is to injuries. In last week’s Indian Wells, Bencic was able to get one victory in the Californian desert, just like Errani. Bencic defeated Tsvetana Pironkova in straight sets but played poorly in the next round as she was beaten by Kiki Bertens in straight sets.
Head to head: Bencic leads the head to head 2-0, including a 6-1 6-2 demolition job in their previous encounter at Brisbane last year. Both players were ranked in the top 20 during that match in Brisbane, it’s such a pity that these two player’s rankings have dropped so much!
Prediction: Think the Swiss will be able to get through the match fairly quickly. Bencic possesses power which is able to throw off Errani and attack her weak serves. For these two players, it’s all about rediscovering their confidence and try to garner some wins to get back into the Top 100.
Prediction: Bencic to beat Errani in two
