Mandy Minella and Kristyna Pliskova will face off in the first round of the Miami Open. Kristyna is starting to come out of her sister’ footsteps, even reaching the third round of Indian Wells but fell to Dominika Cibulkova after having a match point. Can she make another move this week in Miami?
Mandy Minella (No.74) vs Kristyna Pliskova (No.52)
Overview: Luxembourg’s Mandy Minella is coming off a disappointing loss to Sara Errani last week, losing 7-5 in the the decider. Minella has had a fine 2017, having 10 wins (incl. qualifying) throughout the year. Three wins came in Taipei, where she made the semifinals at the tournament, thus it is a possibility she could cause an upset here.
Kristyna Pliskova also comes to Miami after a bitter loss, having match point over Top 5 opponent Dominika Cibulkova but lost. Pliskova will try to make up for lost amends here this week.
Head to head: Minella leads the head to head 2-0, but their previous meeting came in 2012, so don’t think this stat is really relevant.
Thoughts: Even though Minella has the better results so far, I’m going with Pliskova for this. Pliskova was really good in Indian Wells and I’m convinced that Kristyna will make some kind of upset this week.
Prediction: Kristyna Pliskova to beat Minella in two
